Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tammie Howe, Founder of Behave Dog Training LLC., located in Overland Park, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My title might be dog trainer; however, I train the people more than the dogs in reality. I educate them on how they can relate to their dogs in a way the dogs understand. I teach them everything they need to know about their dog and how to have a dog that has great house manners. I have a knack for getting everyone in the family excited about training the dog.

Tell us about yourself

My Grandpa Howe actually inspired me to get into behavior work. He could train anything.... he could break any horse, train any dog, had pet squirrels and chinchillas. When I said that he could train anything, he had a pet coyote named foxy that we used to play with. One thing that he taught me was to gain the respect of any animal; you have to respect them as well. I have never forgotten that advice. What keeps me going in this business is the fact that without training, many dogs end up in shelters. I like to keep the families together, and that includes the pets.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking the plunge to start my own business. I have been training for over 20 years now, but it has always been a supplemental income. I decided in 2020 to just go full-time training and add the boarding in to get the money flowing and sustain the business. I have no regrets, and I am proud of myself for sticking it out.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the hardest part of being a business owner is balancing my personal life and the business. The work is never done, and it is hard to tear myself away and just relax. Something that I know I need to do, or it could negatively affect myself and, ultimately, my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make mindful choices when it comes to balancing personal life and business. When you are offered help, take it. Do your homework when it comes to the things you may not be aware of, like phone systems or advertising. There are a lot of people ready to take advantage of the all to trusting new business owners.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I think if you want it bad enough, just do it. You will have no regrets about giving your dreams a fair shake.
