Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance training but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tessa Myers, Owner of Bees Knees Burlesque Academy, located in Cortland, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Bees Knees Burlesque Academy, a dance studio (in person, virtual, and on-demand options) that specializes in Burlesque and letting people live their sexy and weird out loud.

Tell us about yourself

I wanted to create a place (with my dance partner Jo) where everyBODY was welcome to dance, create and have space on a stage. It started out much smaller and very different than it is now, but we let the magic happen. I'm motivated every day by seeing the changes we've made in people's lives, how they feel about their bodies, how they believe in themselves, and the friendships that are created here.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The community of amazing people that I get to be surrounded by all because I decided to live my dream.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staying consistent.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know who your people are, don't share your ideas with folks who won't support you.
  2. Know your numbers.
  3. Dream even bigger than you thought possible.
  4. Don't hold so tight to your initial idea that your business doesn't have room to blossom and grow.
