What's your business, and who are your customers?

Beauties Lab is a multidimensional ethical and inclusive space that unites green beauty experts and enthusiasts. Its mission is to simplify the art of self-care through wholesome products, customized treatments, and sharing knowledge and expertise.

Tell us about yourself

I have accumulated more than 15 years of experience in the beauty industry. First, starting as a make-up artist for a well-known brand, I rapidly discovered the power that resides in the art of make-up. I highlighted and showcased people's beauty while fueling my passion for art and the individual. I quickly transitioned to different film and photography studios. I set myself apart with my ability to capture people's natural beauty while meeting the artistic requirements of each assignment.

My entrepreneurial skills and ability to connect with anyone I meet led me to a first leap into the business world in 2013 with the creation of Kat&Léa. This company specializes in high-end wedding make-up services. I then oversaw and led a team of around twenty hair and make-up artists.

Eager to bring something new to the industry and to change my own perception of beauty, I created in 2016 an online platform named Beauties And Co. Originally a space with a lifestyle feel where I could share my knowledge. With new findings, the purpose of Beauties becomes clearer, democratizing the beauty and cosmetics industry and creating a modern space where people can exchange and learn. Ideas and community-driven, I then launched Beauties Lab in 2019, a retail store offering a variety of products that meet my highest standards. The selection we offer should be wholesome but also ethical and inclusive. An on-site visit also allows you to book tailored treatments with skincare specialists who will accompany you in the creation of an optimal and minimalist routine. Beauties Lab attracts media attention with its contemporary character and its focus on health and environmental matters.

In 2020, I introduced Pescara, a signature home and body fragrance inspired by memories and travels created in collaboration with perfumer Danal El Masri. That same year, I then presented Minēra, the first Canadian gua sha. Influenced by traditional Chinese facial therapy and produced in Québec, the hand-sculpted porcelain improves blood flow and facilitates lymphatic drainage, all while giving the skin its natural glow.

My friends say I am a businesswoman that distinguishes herself with her empathy and unique way of prioritizing pleasure and well-being in the development of her actions.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating something big enough to allow me to touch more people than I did when I was freelancing. Whether it's their faces or their heart.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The learning curve and the to-do list can feel like climbing Mount Everest without a guide. Trying to please everyone all the time is also very intense. I'm having a hard time looking at what I've done instead of stressing out with what I haven't done yet... And finally, firing someone you like but don't fit in the company's culture.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Wake up 3 hours earlier than you actually do.
  2. Treat your body as a temple, they say? Well, it's even more true if you run a business. What you eat, drink, and who you surround yourself with will influence your project.
  3. When you're off, you're off. Keep your phone away and connect with mother nature.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There's an app that summarizes books in 15 minutes. You will need that app. ;) Finally, always remember why you do what you do. Every morning, every hour, every minute, in every interaction. Enjoy the ride!
