Simple Ingredients, Freshly Baked - Bearclaw Kitchen

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Lange, founder, and CEO of Bearclaw Kitchen, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bearclaw Kitchen is a female-powered granola and snack company based in Los Angeles. We make flavor-driven, high-quality, nutrient-rich granola to fuel your next adventure. Our motto is "Please devour and claw on!"

Tell us about yourself

I am a lifelong baker who attended pastry school at Le Cordon Bleu after becoming inspired by the amazing restaurant scene in LA. I was working my first pastry chef job at a restaurant when I created our signature granola flavor, Honey Run. I had tried out a few different careers before this, but I always came back to baking because I love how food makes people happy. Seeing people light up when they try our granola for the first time is what keeps me in the game.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting our products on the shelves of Bristol Farms was very exciting for us. That type of credibility has really helped us market the product with confidence.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I've had Bearclaw for almost eight years, and I also had two kids along the way. Focusing on your family and trying to grow your business at the same time is incredibly challenging. Also, as your business grows, you will have to learn new skills, and you have to be open to that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Have as many people try your product as possible. Know the numbers and cost out everything, not just ingredients. Be nosy and get as much information from other businesspeople as possible. Also, learn sales and marketing early on--your success will depend on it!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a business owner is incredibly rewarding, and I encourage everyone to do the research and go after your dreams!
