What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the author of a rhyming children's picture book called, "Baby Dragon's Big Sneeze." It is designed for children ages 3-7. My publishing company, Be-Kind Publishing, produces books for children with pro-social messages like teamwork, sharing, kindness, forgiveness, accountability, etc.
Tell us about yourself
I hold a master's degree in Social Work and have studied child development. I use these insights to inform my picture book writing. I also hold a master's degree in Journalism and am currently working in public relations. My goal in creating Be-Kind Publishing is to produce lighthearted rhyming stories with gentle themes of teamwork and friendship. I reside just outside of Chicago, IL, with my husband and two terriers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is getting this book self-published and selling a good number of books in less than 6 months.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is the marketing that comes along with book publishing. Marketing is like another job. It is a daily task.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If you have a good idea for a business, get funding (a loan or similar) and just get started. You will find others to help along the way.
- Join Facebook groups, in-person meetups, and networking groups for others in your field and find at least one good mentor.
- Work a little on your new business daily—while retaining other income streams (like your regular 9-5 for at least the first year).
