Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Deniece Jordan, owner of Be. Hair + Beauty Lounge, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Be. Hair + Beauty Lounge is a personal hair care business that focuses on a female demographic welcoming all nationalities, races, and orientations. We specialize in natural, kinky, and coily hair care providing treatments, color, and styling services.

Tell us about yourself

I'm someone that enjoys building connections and inspiring others to be themselves. From a young age, I learned that when you look good, you feel good! I had always been interested in beauty-related services, often experimenting on cousins, aunts, and friends - but it was as hair that always gave me the most satisfaction. Genuine client relationships and continued satisfaction propel me to be the best I can be in my craft.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was opening Be. Hair + Beauty Lounge in the midst of the pandemic. I'm so grateful to have had the support of my clients, family, and friends when making that decision.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is knowing that the success of your business is really up to you and you alone. Even with that pressure, it's so important to establish and maintain boundaries and a work-life balance for yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear idea of what your business idea is, who your customers are, and what makes your business unique. It should align with who you are as an individual.
  2. Prior to launching, run your ideas by close family members, friends, and potential clients that will share their honest feedback. This way, you can create the best first public impression.
  3. Don't get too comfortable. There's ALWAYS room for growth.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be yourself! Know your strengths and weaknesses, be open to suggestions, and know there will be ups and downs as an entrepreneur.
