What's your business, and who are your customers?
Bayou Terrebonne Distillers is a craft spirits distillery. Our customers are both individuals who purchase our products directly from the BTD tasting room and distributors who place our products with retailers in Louisiana.
Tell us about yourself
The reason why I'm in the whiskey business dates back to Prohibition. My great-grandmother, Lillie, was a moonshiner on Bayou Terrebonne. She was also our town's first Mardi Gras Queen. Her copper pot still was passed down to my godfather, and we started using it after sitting it up for almost 100 years.
The purpose of Bayou Terrebonne Distillers is to preserve an illicit family tradition along with the culture of the Bayou Region. That purpose motivates me to carry on every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our town, Houma, was devastated by Hurricane Ida last year. After the storm passed, we used the distillery as a supply depot, hot food station, and a free grocery store for our community members in need.
Being able to assist my town during one of its most challenging times is my biggest accomplishment as a business owner.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Task management, especially with a limited staff, can be a challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your job.
- Persevere.
- Don't get wrapped up in being a "business owner." If that label is all you care about, you won't be able to call yourself a business owner for very long.
