Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kody Au, Chiropractor of Baseline Health and Wellness Inc., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic and our customers range from newborns to the elderly. Our target audience is 25-45 females who are active, professional, and health conscious, but we treat conditions and all age groups that arrive with physical ailments.

Tell us about yourself

My background is as a registered nurse, and while working, I got hurt on the job. A patient fell, and I caught them and injured my lower back, and wasn't able to work as a result. So I ended up seeing a chiropractor, and within 4-5 visits, I was back to work and feeling pretty good. So being young and adventurous, I decided to pursue further education. I had once thought of medicine, but after working in the hospital, I realized it wasn't my calling. So Instead, I shifted toward Chiropractic Medicine. Once I got to chiropractic school, I realized that 90% of our education was based on the spine, and I didn't just want to be a spine guy, so I ended up completing a sports and exercise sciences Masters degree to further my knowledge in working with areas outside of the spine. What I learned was that most physical injuries are a combination of muscle, joint, and compensatory actions, and so that is how I practice, helping clients recover through muscle work, joint mobilization, and rehab exercises. What motivates me each day is knowing that I can make a difference in someone's life and, as a result, they can make an impact on someone else. There is so much suffering going through life; I just find immense joy in helping individuals take control of their pain and empower them to make a change for the better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a team of individuals who share the same vision of helping clients and providing a way of expanding that vision to help more people in the future.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Managing all the different tasks required to keep the business running and wearing all the hats. Managing clients, staff, and team members while also looking to keep a healthy life and keeping the personal relationships that are important.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find out your vision and where you see yourself, your business, and what you are looking to accomplish personally and professionally before starting the venture business. If your personal goals and professional/business goals do not synergistically work together, then one of those goals will have to give.
  2. Everyone sees business as the tip of the iceberg and all the great things about being a business owner. What they don't see is all the hardships, time, failures, sleepless nights, anxiety, and stress that are underneath "the success" everyone sees. Business can be great, but it can also be the worst thing if you are not ready and prepared for the work it takes
  3. Make sure you identify your core values as an individual and then identify your business core values. They do not need to be the same, but they do need to have some alignment, or your business will be soul-sucking and simply not enjoyable.
