Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in financial services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Parham Mirshahpanah, Partner and COO of BASECAMP Consulting Group, located in Irvine, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a finance and accounting consulting firm that partners with lifestyle brands and CPG companies, specifically in Natural Foods, Wine & Spirits, Cannabis, and Apparel. We offer outsourced CFO services, bookkeeping, financial modeling, cash flow management, and inventory & production planning.

Tell us about yourself

I've known one partner for 20 years, and I quickly came to respect, admire, and enjoy working with our other partner. Together, we've built an incredibly talented team of great people that I enjoy working with, day in and day out. I'm learning new things every day, and we get to work with explosive clients that are building the future, and we get to be a part of that journey with them. In aggregate, what motivates me each day are the people I work with - both colleagues and clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Focus. It's very tempting to chase down every new lead and opportunity as a business owner early on, but not every opportunity is the right one. Being able to find our focus has enabled us to grow quickly and develop a high-quality service that delivers tangible value to our clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time management. I'd love to spend more time on everything, but I need to prioritize the most important things each day to ensure we are on track with our objectives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Define your product or service. Figure out what you're really good at and what the market wants. That intersection is where you'll find success.
  2. Focus on demand. A lot of business owners focus on all the wrong things first, like building a fancy website, hiring a lawyer, and investing in a logo. The first thing to figure out is what people want to buy from you. Once you have that, the rest is (relatively) simple, or you can outsource it to a firm like BASECAMP : )
  3. Hire the best people. Even though they may be expensive, the right team will make all the difference.
