Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Meghan Barrington, Founder of Barrington Kinetics, located in Puyallup, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an in-person and online strength and conditioning coach. Many of my clients are peripartum women, but I work with all ages, genders, and backgrounds!
Tell us about yourself
I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Athletic Trainer, so my approach to fitness is very much for longevity, injury prevention, and performance! I also have a background as a fitness competitor and appreciate bodybuilding for both the art and science that it is. I've been an in-person trainer since 2014, and in 2020 started sharing my workouts on social media, which led to online coaching. During physical therapy, school coaches for the extra income and human interaction! I now work full-time as a physical therapist in an outpatient setting while I build my own business. I am motivated by empowering others and helping them live their most confident, fulfilled lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Honestly, at this point, I am just proud of the organic growth I've accomplished while always having full-time school or working on top of my own business! Having the respect of other coaches and clinicians is important to me, but the biggest wins are the clients I have been able to support in their fitness and rehabilitation journeys.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It is challenging not to work 24/7. I have always been one to do many things at once and overachieve in all of them. I may have a high work capacity, but that doesn't mean I need to work at that capacity all the time!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be yourself - there are many people with your credentials, education, even background... but only one you!
- Stay organized - having a calendar and spreadsheets to keep me on top of my game has been incredibly important in both productivity and serving my clients.
- Remember your "why" - My "why" is elevating others. Whenever I get stressed out or wonder if I'm on the right track, I bring myself back to my why, and everything aligns as it should.
