Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rick Barr, Owner of Barr Estate Winery, located in Sherwood Park, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an artisan fruit winery. We make authentic wines that are true to the fruits that they are made from.

Tell us about yourself

We started making wines back in 1990 just for fun. Our passion for making wines has brought us to where we are today.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We had a dream, and like all small businesses, we brought the winery to fruition with hard work. From humble beginnings, breaking the land, planting the fruit, and developing the wines from the ground up. We utilized all of our skills, including our scientific backgrounds, to develop the wines in our own way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a jack of all trades. Trying to figure out ways to do everything ourselves. Good and bad, we learned a lot.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you have a dream, follow it.
  2. Be prepared to be wrong and to realize it.
  3. Work hard.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We very much enjoy what we do. We love meeting people and being a part of the community!
