Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewellery but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Geoffrey Beattie, owner of Barclays Fine Jewellers, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We specialize in fine jewelry, custom design, and jewellery restoration. Our products are unique to us in Victoria. With over 30 years in business, we have a loyal following of repeat clientele. Our best customers are the ones who share our passion for unique and rare gemstone and diamond jewellery.

Tell us about yourself

I began in the jewellery industry as a trainee manager for what is now a major jewellery chain. My interests were in management as well as an opportunity to specialize. In my mid 30's, I immigrated to Canada with my Canadian wife, where we opened our store in Victoria, B.C. I have had the pleasure of making international connections with very fine Companies. Many customers are surprised that we can bring the world of fine luxury jewellery to their doorstep.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner for over 20 years, I would say our biggest accomplishment has been how the store is presented today compared to where we started. It takes time and discipline to realize a vision.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There really is no finish line. Jewellery store ownership is one of the most complicated business models. The behind-the-scenes workload can never be underestimated.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Have a goal of "Becoming." Looking ahead to a bright future can help you get through the struggles that a start-up often has to overcome. Understand that you have more control over your circumstances than you may realize. My experience has been that people ( I am one of them ) want you to succeed for having taken the bold decision you have.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Good friends and family make it all worthwhile.
