Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Barbara McAfee, President of Full Voice Institute, located in St. Croix Falls, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Full Voice Institute is dedicated to helping people find their voice, whatever that means to them. Our customers include leaders, speakers, coaches, therapists, educators, and other people who want to become more skillful communicators.

Tell us about yourself

My work is rooted in what I've learned in freeing my own voice. So many of us carry gifts that can't get into the world because of unconscious vocal habits. In decades of working with voices, I have discovered that when you change your voice, your life also shifts in remarkable ways. It's joyful, enlivening, and transformational work!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest pride and joy in this business is the growing community of people who are trained in my work. Their wisdom and skill have enriched the work in ways that thrill me. I'm also proud of my book, Full Voice: The Art and Practice of Vocal Presence. It was published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers -- a fantastic organization.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are days that I don't want to have to generate all of the ideas and energy to move the business forward. I've been at it now for over 30 years. I've learned to give myself some breathing room when my energy is low and to extend some kindness to myself. I'm not a machine and need to respect the ebbs and flows that come with being human.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be open to what you don't know - including mystery in any of your plans. Make sure you deeply connect with the work; it's the only thing that will sustain you over time. Include non-financial ways to measure success, including your health, family, lifestyle, community, service, and spirituality, as well as money.
