Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kenza Bamba, Co-Founder of Bamba Soap Co., located in Phoenixville, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bamba Soap Co. is based in Phoenixville, PA. We focus on skincare and aromatherapy made with truly natural ingredients and no synthetic fragrances or colorants. Our product collection consists of soaps, body oils, and shower steamers. Our customers are men and women that are seeking high-quality natural skincare products at an affordable price.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Kenza Bamba, and I am originally from Ivory Coast. About six years ago, I decided to go natural with my hair and started experimenting with handmade products to keep my natural hair moisturized. It took me years to learn which ingredients work best with my hair. I made my own shea butter concoction to twist my hair and oils for my scalp.

In 2020, I thought about starting a skincare company to help teach more people about the importance of the products we use on our bodies. I also wanted to give back to my community, whether it's monetarily with our business' annual profits or by donating soap to local homeless shelters.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The sense I pride I feel every time a customer tells me how much they love my products, how well my products work for them, or how much they love the scents. I also love when a new customer comes to my table at a farmer's market because they were told about us or they were just attracted by what they see or smell.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning how to say no without feeling guilty. As a small business owner, I am often approached by other businesses with various propositions. I often find myself stuck between feeling guilty by saying no or feeling like I am making a mistake by declining an offer to collaborate. I do my best to make the right decisions for myself and my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do your research about the products you're planning to sell, and don't be scared to reach out to those who've been in the business long enough to give advice. Never stop learning. Don't ever lose the motivation and drive that got you started, and continue to use it to fuel your passion.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Although I've only been a business owner for two years, I would like everyone to know that I am always here and willing to help others in any way I can, whether it's tips on soap making or advice on the basics of starting a business.
