Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brooke Bal, founder and CEO of bakebars, located in Boca Raton, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

bakebars is an all-natural protein bar kit. It comes will all the pre-measured ingredients you need to make healthy protein bars; all you have to add is water. The bars are plant-based, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and contain no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or unhealthy additives. Our customers care about what they are putting in their bodies.

Tell us about yourself

I started bakebars after I was diagnosed with severe gluten intolerance. It was after that that I started reading ingredient labels more carefully and realized that a lot of the foods that are touted as "healthy" really aren't. A lot of these so-called healthy foods contain an excessive amount of sugars, artificial ingredients, hydrogenated oils, and other nutritionally-void ingredients. I also realized how much the food you eat affects the way you feel. I started making my own protein bars and saw how many other people had the same problem as me finding a protein bar that wasn't a disguised candy bar and wasn't breaking the budget. From there, bakebars were born. Hearing people say how much they love bakebars and how they had the same problem that I did finding a healthy protein bar. It motivates me to know that our customers really love and support our business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Inspiring other females not to be intimidated by starting their own company.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are definitely good days and bad days. I’m learning how important it is to stay persistent, persevere, and trust the process. Business, just like life, is filled with setbacks, challenges, failures, and successes. You have to recognize that everything you face on a daily basis is a chance to learn and grow as a business owner. All in all, the possibilities are endless, and the experience is priceless.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Definitely know your target audience and the existing market. Know your strengths and weaknesses, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Surround yourself with a good team that you can trust.
