Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bailey Fitzgerald, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, based in St. John’s, NL, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I take a natural approach to health, from eating the right foods for your body to healthy lifestyle practices to achieve optimal health, but there is much more to it. It is about connecting with individuals on a whole level. By whole level, I mean we want to get to the root cause of an individual's health concerns by considering their diet, lifestyle, and their physical and mental being.

Tell us about yourself

I'm Bailey, and I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist who has always been inspired by food and its ability to promote overall wellness. I spent years struggling with my health, both emotionally and psychically. I tried crash diets, medication, and internet trends in hopes of finding something to make me feel "good," but nothing was working, and the restrictions were making me feel WORSE. I was constantly stressed, and my body was not healthy. I needed balance, which was exactly what I discovered when I started studying Holistic Nutrition. I learned how to fuel my body with the proper nutrients to achieve optimal health, energy, and satiety- and the best part… I wasn't depriving myself of anything! This motivates me each day to keep working hard so I can help other individuals who might be in a similar situation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was the day that I got my first client booking for a nutrition consult. It was such a great feeling knowing that all the hard work I was putting into building my business was paying off.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest part of being a new business owner is underestimating how much time and effort must go into building and maintaining a business. Not only the start-up work that goes in before you open your business [web building/ social media content/ planning] but also once my business was up and running, I felt like I had to be turned on and present all the time- growing my network and marketing myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate - Love what you do. You are going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting and developing your business, so it's important that you truly deeply enjoy what you do.
  2. Find a good work-life balance- As mentioned, it's easy to let work dominate your life. This could result in losing touch with other things in your life that are important. It's also crucial to take care of your own health and well-being.
  3. Get out there and network yourself- Until you've established your business, you'll need to create your own marketing using word-of-mouth. Be your own brand ambassador, expressing the benefits of working with your business and showing why people should work with you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Good nutrition is the key to optimal health, and it can improve physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Holistic nutritional counseling focuses strongly on optimizing digestive health and incorporating whole-natural foods that are organic and sourced locally (as much as possible). These principles, combined with healthy habits and good self-care, will help you to feel your best!
