What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bagel University is a 25-year institution in Vineland. Our customer base transcends generations. We make our bagels the traditional way. Boiled, then baked. We mixed our cream cheeses in-house. All of our bagels are made from natural ingredients, no fats or oils. Our bagels are huge, which makes our sandwiches enormous. The focus on "Service and Product" is our mantra.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Victor Villar, born and raised in Vineland. I take my local small business very seriously. I've co-owned Manny and Vic's Pizza for close to 20 yrs. I own Bagel University. Its been in the family for over 15yrs. I love serving the community; nothing makes me happier than someone complimenting my product or service. These businesses, along with many more, are the pillars of this town.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying open for all these years. The peaks and valleys that have to be endured can be challenging. I have been blessed with great employees and community support.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The difficulties are true with the unexpectedness that life can bring. Dealing with issues daily and always having to have an answer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always make a business plan. This forces you to put ideas in writing and fact-check them.
  2. Believe in yourself and your plan. You put the time and work in to make it happen.
  3. Reflect daily, weekly, and yearly. Always challenge yourself to improve. Listen to the criticism, but don't let it define you.
