Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Levi Biddlecombe & Rob Wick, owners of Backstairs Burger, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are both fine dining trained chefs taking burgers to another level with creative combinations and techniques we have picked up throughout our cooking careers.

Tell us about yourself

Levi had a different restaurant, and Rob approached him with the idea of running a burger pop-up out of the back door to get some sales boosts during the pandemic. It got very popular very fast, but a few months later, the restaurant burned down; after that happened, they focused all their effort on opening Backstairs Burger full time, and ten months after the fire, Backstairs Burger opened inside of 5th Street Food Hall. The feedback has been incredible, and there have been lots of accolades in the short time it has been open. Being able to say we have the best burger in the city pushes us every day to keep pushing boundaries and being better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, we were the #2 burger in the city in a competition of 64 burgers, and we were #20 on the list of the top 100 best things to eat in Edmonton.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is a lot of stress and uncertainty, especially in the first year. A lot of time spent away from family and a lot of very long days.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient; it does not happen overnight; it takes a lot of consistency and time.
  2. Be passionate; if you don’t love what you do, you will never put in the effort needed to succeed.
  3. Be open to criticism and the ideas of the people around you.
