Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kara Froula, Founder of BackEmbrace, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

BackEmbrace is a woman-owned company committed to providing high-quality posture support that is effective, stylish, and actually feels good — like a gentle embrace.

While many posture supports are bulky, uncomfortable, irritating to the skin, and cheaply made, the BackEmbrace Posture Corrector contours your body with premium custom-woven soft material for a smooth, seamless fit. By gently retracting your shoulders into proper alignment, BackEmbrace relieves tension and strain in the upper back, neck, and shoulders.

BackEmbrace is perfect for anyone who sits at a desk, spends time in a car, experiences tension in their back and shoulders, or just wants to improve their posture.

Tell us about yourself

Before I created BackEmbrace, I worked as an accountant, which meant long hours in front of a computer. I had constant tension and strain in my upper back, neck, and shoulders. I went to massage therapists and chiropractors but only received temporary relief. I tried posture supports, but they were bulky, uncomfortable, irritating to the skin — and far from stylish! So I created posture support that is attractive, effective, and actually feels good — like a gentle embrace. Introducing BackEmbrace, the first posture corrector you'll actually want to wear!

Knowing that what I have created is helping people stand taller and feel better keeps me motivated. Keeping a positive mindset and focusing on the wins helps fuel that motivation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Receiving recognition from some of the most reputable media outlets, such as Healthline, Good Morning America, Huffington Post, SHAPE, etc., is something I am really proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Understanding your strengths and learning to outsource those aspects of the business that someone else can do better and more efficiently can be challenging for business owners. I have found that finding the right people to support you and your business at its different stages is essential to being able to thrive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Connect with others: I have developed many meaningful relationships on my journey as an entrepreneur. Connecting and sharing experiences, struggles, and accomplishments with fellow entrepreneurs have undoubtedly led to more success both professionally and personally.
  2. Be resourceful: As a self-funded startup, I didn't have the money to hire an agency for market research — I had to be resourceful. I remembered doing case studies on real-life companies in college, so I pitched BackEmbrace to one of the Marketing classes at UCLA. Several students took it on as their semester project, and I was presented with market research and a lot of great feedback that helped me refine my prototypes.
  3. Take time to recharge: It can be challenging to take breaks from your business, but in my experience, it's essential. Without rest and self-care, entrepreneurs are prone to burnout. Taking time to step away from my business, whether it's an afternoon or a couple of days, has helped me gain a more clear perspective so I can come back refreshed and put my focus on what matters most.
