Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tony McNeill, Co-Founder of B2E Consulting, located in London, Greater London, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

B2E Consulting is a business consultancy offering a broad range of professional services to help clients solve operational challenges in a cost-effective manner. During the last 20 years, we have grown a community of over 20,000 independent, high-caliber consultants giving us an unrivaled ability to find an available deep expert matched to the specific client requirement. Our clients are large national and international companies, usually found with the FTSE100.

Tell us about yourself

I am an engineer by training but a management consultant by profession. I worked for the world's largest consulting company and, after 15 years, decided to set up a practice with a business partner.

Most of our employees are ex-consultants, many having worked together at previous Firms. I like working together with like-minded professionals who take business seriously but understand that life is to be enjoyed too. We share a desire to grow a business that offers excellent client service whilst respecting the needs of our employees and their families.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In May 2019, B2E Consulting became employee-owned under the government's Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) scheme. This means that 70% of the company is now owned by all the employees of the Firm. By creating the EOT vehicle, the future of the business is placed in the hands of those who have helped to grow it, hopefully securing the business for future generations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner means that the buck stops with you. There can be no job too small or boring that can escape your gaze, especially during the start-up phase. An ability and appetite to take on any challenge are essential.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be conservative with cash. Try to avoid spending before earning.
  2. Always make time for anyone that wants to talk with you. You never know where that will lead.
  3. Be grateful when people are prepared to work with you; it is an honour and deserves your very best efforts to find a way to make the relationship work. Build people up; don't knock them down.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

On a personal level being a business owner has offered me immense control over my business and personal life. Leaving the safety of employment can be a daunting prospect, but for many, it is the opportunity to show what is possible when freed from the shackles of corporate life.
