Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brooke Sellas, Founder and CEO of B Squared Media, located in Flemington, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Big firm results. Boutique agency dedication. B Squared Media is a digital marketing agency specializing in outsourced social media customer services and care management. Our marketing mantra: Think Conversation, Not Campaign.™

Tell us about yourself

As the Founder and CEO of B Squared Media, I spend most of my time working on sales and marketing. In fact, as the only salesperson for the company, every lead gets a free consultation directly with ME (and I wouldn't have it any other way!). I also provide training, consulting, and speak on, the digital customer experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Probably writing my book, Conversations That Connect, last year. It was one of the hardest yet most rewarding things I've ever done (yes, even harder than launching a company!).

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Juggling "all the things" can be overwhelming. Add to that the pressure of sales (in my position) and knowing that I'm supporting a team of 30+ people, and it can feel scary at times. Luckily, I have an amazing CSO who happens to be my husband. Our team is also incredibly talented, so as long as I can keep closing deals and promoting the B Squared Media brand, I know they'll deliver top-notch service.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. First and foremost, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. The processes you build to complete certain tasks lived in my head for years. It was hard to make our first hire because I had to get all of those "punch lists" out of my head and into repeatable processes.
  2. Hire for culture, not skills. Sure, skills and experience are important. But, we put a lot of emphasis on hiring people who will fit into our culture. We're extremely protective of our team, so we want to make sure the new hires will offer the same respect and helpful attitude that our current team delivers.
  3. Get out from behind the desk. I have a bad habit of sitting at my computer for 10+ hours a day. However, I've come to realize that nearly all of my creative ideas (and best ideas) happen when I'm not at my desk. They happen in the car, while horseback riding, or taking a walk. Don't beat yourself up for not being at your desk; work comes in many forms and happens in many places.
