Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Benito Salazar, Founder of B&A Style Studio, located in Ruskin, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of B&A Style Studio in Ruskin, Florida. At B&A Style Studio, our stylists provide a broad range of beauty services, [from hair cutting to hair coloring. (Balayage, highlights, ombré)], lash extensions, and nails. My clientele is very diverse. Most are in search of the newest trend. By using the best products and techniques, I am able to give my clients a look they want while protecting their hair. On any given day, I can have a high schooler, a mother, and a professional woman sit in my chair. All are welcome.

Tell us about yourself

I am motivated by my clients. When a client entrusts me with their hair, something that is so integral to beauty, I understand that it is more than just a cut or style. The reaction my clients have when they catch that first glimpse in the mirror, how my clients look and feel, and the instant boost in confidence that is what I live for. The same excitement my clients experience when I reveal their transformation is so contagious and gratifying from working at my regular job full-time and attending Paul Mitchell, the school of Tampa, part-time. I knew once I graduated. Owning my own business was the only way. Attending Paul Mitchell taught me the basics of becoming a licensed cosmetologist. Interacting with real people trained me in how it was going to be in the real world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to help individuals who want to join a team that learns and stays up-to-date on what's going on in the beauty industry. I am providing individuals freshly out of cosmetology school a space in a well-known salon that will help them build clientele as they master their skills and provide guidance along the way.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things you'll have to face as a business owner is dealing with the unexpected. Change happens daily. Having something that's unplanned happen and learning to figure out how to resolve any issues.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Social media platforms. Nowadays, using social media is essential to growing your business. Building and posting every day will help someone mention you when looking for a particular business is brought up.
  2. Surround yourself with the right people. The people around you should be uplifting, positive, and supportive. Having individuals that support you 100 percent will always have a positive outcome.
  3. Have a healthy work-life balance. It can get kind of crazy when you bring either your work life home or vice Versa, your home issues to your job. So balancing both and enjoying being off will show, especially when showing up to your business with a positive mindset/attitude.
