Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Miller, founder of Awkward Auntie, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I make small pieces of home decor from cement. I love being able to create one-of-a-kind pieces that always manage to find the perfect home. My pieces are for people who love the conversation-starting decor and who see beauty in the imperfect and unique.

Tell us about yourself

I initially created pieces for myself and for my friends. We were at the age where big things were happening -- new homes, new families, new jobs -- and I wanted to be able to create pieces that I could give to my friends. Once they started asking for custom pieces to give to their friends and family, I knew it was time to explore selling my creations. In general, I am motivated by my family, especially my nieces and nephews, who I want to make proud of.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far was being named as one of Madewell's Hometown Heroes in the fall of 2020.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard to know when to say no to things, even myself. I'm learning to get better at creating an acceptable work/life balance and to be better about asking for help, so I don't run myself into the ground!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Talk to anyone willing to talk to you. These could be business owners, friends, or family. Everyone has an opinion or thought that is helpful to your growth.
  2. Be willing to pivot. Your initial plan might not be what happens in the end.
  3. Ask for help. If you have friends or family who want to support you, let them. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but I think it takes a village to start a business, too.
