Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sherry Avery, Owner of Avery's Savory Popcorn, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Avery's Savory Popcorn LLC is a Dallas-based, woman/minority-owned and - operated store that offers fresh gourmet popcorn made in small batches on-site daily. Avery's Savory Popcorn is made daily at our downtown Dallas store. We never outsource our popcorn, so you'll always get a fresh, crunchy--never stale or chewy—treat every time. Avery's Savory LLC Popcorn opened backed by our commitment to finding the best ingredients and making the highest-quality products possible. We make the best Gourmet popcorn in this city of Dallas and worldwide. When you come into Avery's Savory Popcorn, we want to give you an experience that you don't typically receive in most places nowadays. We offer you a warm greeting as you walk thru our doors as well as we want you to sample our entire menu before you make a purchase that way, you know exactly what you are getting.

Tell us about yourself

Avery's Savory Popcorn LLC is the brainchild of our Dallas Based-Family team, Sherry (Mother), Allen (Father), Steffon (Son), and Aleisha (Daughter) Avery. We began dreaming of opening a popcorn store in 2010 after studying the local, regional, and national markets and personally taste-testing popcorn at some of the country's most successful popcorn retailers. We were convinced we could deliver a product that was unique and better tasting than anything else currently available. The Avery family tradition of community service extends to our company too. At the end of each day, we donate our excess popcorn to The Stewpot, a nonprofit organization that provides 1,000 meals per day to residents who do not have permanent homes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of the most celebrated accomplishments is surviving the COVID-19 pandemic. We were able to not only sustain the business but we make a major pivot to our online e-commerce store. Focusing on this part of the business got us through a very difficult time. We established an increase in local deliveries and created a national presence.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In today's market, running a business can be extremely difficult when it comes to identifying your targeted audience and how to get them engaged. If you don't have a large marketing budget, you will really need to get creative. We at Avery's savory Popcorn LLC had to use our personal networks and get the kids involved by working on social media and participating in local events. These are just a few ideas that helped us develop our current following.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The first and most important is to create a solid business plan that really states what, where, how, and why you want to go into business. Second, always surround yourself with experts that can help you understand what you don't know. This should include business formation, financial, legal, and real estate, just to name a few. Third, customer service is KING. We studied many types of food businesses and found that most fail due to poor customer service. We pride ourselves on creating a friendly and welcoming experience.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
