Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Greg Payne, owner of AVANT Chiropractic, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

AVANT Chiropractic is a premier structural corrective care chiropractic office in Ottawa's downtown core. This means we help take care of your whole spine and nervous system (the main control system for everything in your body). We serve a wide range of patients from months old to patients in their 80s and 90s. People engage in our services for a wide range of reasons. We help improve degenerating discs and spines to strengthen the structural integrity of the spine and nervous system. The benefits alleviate pain and suffering and help optimize patients' health and wellness.

Tell us about yourself

I was fascinated by the connection between the spine and the nervous system from a very young age. I remember a Scientific American book publication of Neuro-Immunology. The relationship between the two biological systems amazed me. I remember reading about how changes to the spine affected the nervous system and, in turn, a person's physiology. I later found that this is the core science and philosophy of Chiropractic. Every day, I improve people's lives by taking care of their spine and nervous system. The stories my patients tell about how their lives have been positively impacted are the reason I practice. It is what I am passionate about.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is that I have been able to run a successful healthcare business for the Ottawa community for 30 years. I have been able to maintain balance with meaningful work while also pursuing other joys in life is something I am proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Small businesses, in particular, have limited resources. Business owners need to be agile to meet their business's demands and challenges. The ability to make decisions in a timely manner can be a challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Manage expectations: It is often said that we overestimate what we can accomplish in one year but underestimate what we can do in 5 years.
  2. Learn from your business mistakes because you are going to make them.
  3. Find a mentor. It helps to launch from the wisdom of others that have travelled a similar road.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I think it helps to define your definition of success. Starting, running, and sustaining a business is very rewarding insomuch as it relates to this definition.
