Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Randi McLaren, Owner of Avalê Healing, located in Oxford, England, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My main offering is intuitive reiki healing, which means that I work with people who are simply wanting to find a deeper sense of relaxation, with womxn looking for womb/yoni specific healing, to cancer patients and beyond.

Apart from just feeling the energy and sensing what needs assistance for a client, I also work with a client's guides/angels and relay the messages I see in the forms of colors, images, and affirmations or directions.

Tell us about yourself

I really got interested in reiki when I was doing my course for equine massage therapy. I had to present a complimentary alternative modality to massage, and I immediately knew I wanted to dive into that. I started my business in the summer of 2021, and because restrictions were still in place, I've only offered distance reiki.

I'm also a very nomadic person, so although doing equine massage is too static for me, I can do reiki from anywhere in the world to anyone in any time zone! I feel that the gift of creating the space that allows others to heal is truly a blessing, and this is the dream "job" I never knew I wanted as a kid.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting up every day and believing in myself, and striving to realize my vision. I've had several failed businesses in the past, and although there were many factors to account for the failures, consistency, and misalignment were among the top reasons. I started Avalê Healing because it was a passion - not because it was logical. It finally felt aligned. I want to show up for this business, for myself and my clients, because it feels right and encourages me to grow, and that's my biggest win.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting deep with yourself and finding out your WHY. It's getting crystal clear on what your life vision is, how your business factors into and feeds it, and moving from a place that supports that vision every day. The stronger your Why, the less likely your business will fail because you understand your business is the vehicle that gets you closer to achieving your biggest goals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Question "why" on all fronts: Why do I want to start a business? Why do I want to start THIS business? Why now, and not later? Keep asking "why" until you get to the root of the question.
  2. Invest in mentorship. Trust me - I've always been independent, but until I worked with mentors, I had no idea what I was missing. Find one(s) that are more obsessed with your wins and growth than they are with their paycheque and lifestyle.
  3. Embrace failure. If you find out a business isn't working out for you, assess if it's time to break up and start something new. I wouldn't have known what felt true if I hadn't failed multiple times. Remember that you're just finding out what doesn't work for you!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am always expanding and looking to grow my practice in the ways of energy healing for animals (professionally) and creating something tangible for womxn to do and learn from in the realm of Feminine embodiment! I love connecting with people online and will post about any new offerings on my Instagram as soon as they're ready.
