Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andy Farra, Owner of Astray Photography, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a team of wedding photographers and wedding videographers capturing one of life's greatest days of a couple's lives. Our customers are couples who share the same stoke for life as we do and are beyond excited to spend the rest of their lives with the one they love. We live for capturing the true essence of the moment on wedding days and those small intimate details that happen in the blink of an eye.

Tell us about yourself

What started out as a love for the wide open road while documenting our travels has turned into a full-time career capturing real, authentic love stories across the world. We are happiest spending time with good company and strolling the beach with our two little girls, which is typically how we start and end each day. These tiny moments are what we live for, and we believe it translates directly into the style of photos and films we create. Our objective in life is pretty simple: live to create endless memories.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner comes with many different tasks. It's not just taking photos or crafting together a beautiful video, as much as we wish it were. There are a lot of behind-the-scenes aspects of the business, and it tends to be the not-so-glamorous side of our industry. From dealing with insurance and tax forms for contractors to business licenses, these tasks tend to maybe not to be the most challenging but least enjoyable.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There are tips or advice you can give to someone looking to start their business today. As you hear tirelessly, "find your passion," but there are many other great tips before starting out:

  1. Hone a skill that you can become the best at.
  2. Have an optimistic outlook - things will go wrong, and it is the ability to keep going and stay positive which will lead you to success
  3. Add value and serve others instead of looking to just make a dollar.
