Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Asif Minhas, photographer at AMBR Photos, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are wedding photographers based in GTA and serving clients all over Canada and USA.

Tell us about yourself

As long as I remember, I had a passion for cameras and photography. Although I studied to be an electrical engineer, I ended up doing what I love the most. Together with my wife, who has a major in Fine Arts, we are a dynamic duo, capturing the most organic and romantic imagery for which AMBR photos are known. The most motivating part of our work is getting to know couples and unfolding their love stories on their most special day. It's like knitting a story with images, not words.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We love to capture every culture. However, the majority of our clientele consists of South Asian couples. Trust us; it's a challenging market with lots of saturation. Still, we managed to carve out our style and make a place for ourselves. We started this journey a few months before the pandemic, and yet we've managed to sail through those very difficult times.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being wedding photographers, we work around the clock during the season, and having a family with young children and no other family support, we found maintaining a work-life balance is the most challenging part of the job.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First and foremost is perseverance. Find your niche and work on it constantly, many hurdles and setbacks will lower your morale, but the key is to keep going.

Secondly, know your industry's parallel vendors along with the competition. Build a support group and do lots of networking. As a Canadian, know your community and serve it well.

Finally, make your investments wisely both in effort and time.
