Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Mathieu, Fitness & Health Professional, based in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Being an entrepreneur gives me the ability to be creative and bring my talents and expertise to the forefront. With that, my company Stealth Fit Co. focuses on commercial-grade fitness equipment for gyms and homes. We focus on space-saving fitness equipment and accessories for your home or studio.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been a multi-club gym owner for nine years. Previous to this, I was a competitive athlete spending many days training personal training instructor (heading courses and exams for those wanting to be certified as a personal trainer) and operated a private personal training business in a small studio.

With my knowledge and expertise, I decided to start a fitness equipment manufacturing company. I am motivated each day to improve my services and products to give the consumer a quality product that will improve their health.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping people lead and live healthier lifestyles. Being able to watch those who were scared come in with their heads up and challenge themselves each day.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the things anyone needs to understand about being a business owner is not everyone is cut out for it. As an owner, you need to make some difficult decisions. You need to dedicate a lot of your time to the business to ensure it becomes a winning one. Many sacrifices are going to be made.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The first thing I would tell anyone wanting to run their own business… Learn how to use social media!" Social media is a massive habit that, unfortunately, many business owners are not utilizing.
  2. The second tip, understand what you are selling. Running a business where you do not understand the product or service won’t get you very far.
  3. The third tip, ask for help. Asking for help will get you a lot farther than trying to figure out on your own. Be open to personal and professional growth.
