Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Levin, Founder of Ashley Levin Therapy, located in Long Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an Inner Child Trauma Therapist. My clients are adult people-pleasers and perfectionists interested in addressing the impact their inner child wounds have on their adult life. Together we work on gaining insight into how the trauma has led to the development of these survival mechanisms and the limiting core beliefs that are interfering with living life with joy, ease, and abundance. My approach focuses on cultivating the acceptance of the self through the engagement of activities that foster joy and self-love and understanding the meanings made to events that create the story. Additionally, I focus on strengthening the connection between the mind and body so that the two are working together for ultimate healing.

Tell us about yourself

I am an adventurous person who loves connecting with myself, others, and nature. I am also passionate about creating experiences for building community and connections for others. I believe we all need a tribe of like-minded people to support us on our journey. My current lifestyle has developed from my own healing journey of learning about the importance of self-care, connecting to the body, and playing in accessing the true self. My daily routine consists of experiencing joy in all that I do, continual self-exploration, and a self-care routine that is about my well-being, my number one priority. These practices have changed my life, and I have created my business around teaching others how to utilize these tools so that they can experience living the life they were meant to live.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This past April, about a year after starting my business, I hosted an immersive workshop for Therapists on Whole-body Trauma Healing. It was such an honor for me to be able to provide this healing experience to therapists so that they could understand the importance of addressing their own trauma in this way and incorporating these modalities into their work. The event went unbelievably well, and I have had people asking me when I will be hosting the next one. Which I am in the process of setting up for early 2023.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part is not knowing what you don't know. Every day I learn something new about what it takes to run a business and about my own limiting beliefs. The Imposter Syndrome symptoms creep up out of nowhere and are very hard to notice sometimes. I have learned to breathe, pay attention to my accomplishments and ask for help.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a coach or find a mentor to guide you from the beginning. It is a lot of work figuring it all out on your own, and you can waste a lot of time and energy trying to find all the info on your own, and it might end up costing more money in the end.
  2. Build a foundation before you get started. Creating a business plan is a good starting point for this. I recommend to be very clear on your goals for the years, the steps you will take to meet them, determine how much you can invest in the company, create a team of people you will need to carry out the tasks, have other sources of income until the business takes off. A lot of bad decisions can be made when feeling stressed about doing something that should have been done already, and you are playing catch up.
  3. Think outside the box. This is your business, so don't try and be like someone else. This is your opportunity to be you and create something that you get excited about every day, something that aligns with your passions and beliefs.
