Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Ferguson, Founder of Ferguson Family Practice & Occupational Health, located in San Marcos, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a family practice clinic- treating patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. We also provide occupational health services such as pre-employment physicals and drug screens as care for worker's compensation injuries.

We also provide some aesthetic services! We have expanded to start offering laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, and injections, among other things.

Tell us about yourself

I am motivated by helping people. That is the main reason that I opened the practice. I want to be able to treat people, and I believe there is something to be said for time spent and for actually listening to patients. My goal is to improve the quality of life and make a positive difference in people's lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment, if I am being honest, is still being open despite going through a pandemic! This has been a struggle for all of us, and I am humbled and grateful to be able to do still what I do daily.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is juggling it all. While I still see patients almost every day in the clinic, I am working on the business decisions and how to maintain them while keeping staff on board and taking care of everyone; on top of being a wife and mother, it is definitely a never-ending challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your market research and make sure you have a viable business plan for the community in which you are planning to open a business.
  2. Talk to other small business owners and get their perspectives. What would they do differently, would they go back and do it again if given the opportunity, etc.
  3. Learn to delegate. Put trustworthy people in key positions and know they can do their job. You hired them for a reason and put them where they are for a reason! Allow yourself time to be the "business owner." This is especially challenging in the medical field.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Thank you for the opportunity to do this. Nurse practitioners are a key factor in providing quality care to many people that may not otherwise get good care. We are working hard to continue to improve outcomes for patients.
