Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ash Varma, owner of Varma & Associates, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an Executive Coach who specializes in Corporate Leadership Development for C-Suite executives (and those aspiring to be one) and Career Transition Coaching for senior & middle managers, millennials, women leaders, and entrepreneurs from numerous industry sectors.

Tell us about yourself

I've been lucky enough to have had five different careers (International Tax Attorney, Media C-Suite Executive, Solopreneur, DEI COO, culminating in becoming a Senior Executive Coach). In each of these careers, besides being focused on strategy and finance, my main passion has always been working with people and trying to help motivate and guide them to achieve their career goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner, and my greatest joy, is helping people realize their full potential, develop their career goals, and advance to the position or work area that brings them the greatest satisfaction. As I help career transition candidates find their next best opportunity or assist senior leaders in honing additional skills to move up into the C-Suite, it is very rewarding to see my clients succeed.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As an entrepreneur, I often tell my candidates that being a business owner is not for the faint of heart. It really has to be one's passion because one takes on all the different aspects, from janitor to CEO, when one first starts out. As the business grows, I often counsel my clients that they need to know when to ask for help and no longer try to do everything on their own (e.g., when an organizational infrastructure is needed).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get organized.
  2. Know your strategy, target audience, and how you differentiate from the competition.
  3. Remember to always focus on your sales funnel, for without customers. There is no business.
