Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Max Meinerz, Managing Partner of Ascendent Health Partners, located in Elm Grove, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm Max, a Dentist, educator, and health enthusiast. It's my job to take care of people attached to teeth and make sure they live their best lives through dentistry. I do this by helping dental teams optimize their performance and run industry-leading healthcare businesses. Dentistry is facing monumental changes and consolidation in a direction that often increases the shareholder return of the private equity groups that own corporate group practices and decreases patient and provider satisfaction and outcomes.

Tell us about yourself

I come from a family of healthcare providers on the medical and dental side. Entrepreneurship also runs deep. I've enjoyed blending those two things in an effort to preserve relationship-based healthcare in dentistry. I always said I learned how to cut holes in people's teeth in dental school, and I learned how to care for the people walking through the door from family members who were healthcare providers. The patient relationships get me out of bed in the morning each day! Helping as many dentists as possible have that experience by maintaining a private, relationship-driven dental practice is my goal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the satisfaction that comes from knowing I am assisting the best clinical hands and minds in delivering the best outcomes for patients. The providers with those clinical hands and minds do not often have the business savvy to succeed in the current dental marketplace. Offering the non-clinical support required to allow those healers to do what they do best brings incredible satisfaction. Knowing that the 12,000+ active patients we serve are receiving the best care they can is why we show up every day, and we look forward to the next 100,000 patients!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about owning a business is they have yet to invent the 25th hour in a day! Business success requires, from time to time, that other important facets of your life take a different position on the priority list than you'd love to see. When a business owner is not strategic about all facets of life, the business can easily eat the time that belongs to those other important facets.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get strategic about the margin between your business and personal life. How do those things interplay? What are your non-negotiables? How do you make sure that your business serves your customers and also you?
  2. Stay obsessed with your customer! How are you solving their problems for them? Your business decisions should ideally always point toward that goal.
  3. Stand on the shoulders of giants. Others before you have likely faced and overcome the challenges you face. Don't be afraid to ask for advice or assistance from more experienced mentors. Purchasing that advice and assistance can be some of the best money invested in your business.
