Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anna Lenis, Owner of Aroma Desserts and More, located in Lawrenceville, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Aroma Desserts, and we specialize in custom cakes and edible art. Our clients are mostly females (moms, brides) between 25-50 years old who are looking for a spectacular cake to be the centerpiece on the dessert table of their celebration.

Tell us about yourself

I’m an Italian-Venezuelan who came to the USA 20+ years ago, looking for a better future and pursuing the American Dream! I graduated from law school and practiced as an attorney for many years in Caracas-Venezuela, but I always had an artistic vocation. I have loved to sculpt, craft, draw, paint, and create since I was a child. One day I decided I wanted to bake and decorate cakes, so I took some classes, started practicing, and embarked on this journey of the sugar craft. What started as a hobby today is my passion, and it’s very important to do what makes you happy. It’s a dream come true, and everything that is made with love is well-made, delicious, and beautiful. Today, I’m the owner of Aroma Desserts and More, and I recreate my clients’ dreams on cakes so people can build memories on their special celebrations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Opening my own business is my greatest accomplishment. As I said before, what started as a hobby today is not only my passion, it’s my business, and I’m very proud of myself. This year I was able to travel to Paris and complete a program for cake design. It was an extraordinary opportunity and an amazing lifetime experience.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

No matter what happens, or if you are tired, you have to respond to the client and fulfill the agreement—that way, you build credibility in your business and reputation.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be responsible.
  2. Be respectful.
  3. Believe in yourself.
