Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mindie Gum-Grivell, Creative Director of Aries Art NW, located in North Bonneville, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Aries Art NW is built around my personal passion for inspiring creative self-expression. My clients, sponsors, and customers appreciate colorful and wildly imaginative art.

Tell us about yourself

Painting and art have always been a personal passion, and as I continued to prioritize it in my life and also to share it on social media, it evolved. I don't lead it; it leads me. Every day is a new day and a new opportunity to find inspiration for new artworks and new business ventures alike. Through creating art and running my business, I experience flow. That's the real magic of being a maker! I also value using my art as activism for things I am passionate about.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Turning my hobby into an actual business! And winning the Women of Cannabis Entrepreneurship Award in 2019 - this prize package included a lot of the things needed to set me up as a business officially.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a small business owner who is also creating their product by hand - one of the hardest things for me is having to wear all the hats. I don't mind all the various facets associated with running my business because I love it so much, but days spent on the computer doing the technical side of it all make for fewer days at the easel making the product/art.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify who you're really doing this for. If it's not for you, that's okay - but that perspective matters when it comes to defining your mission, goals, and also personal boundaries with your business.
  2. Don't wait for it to be perfect for presenting to the public. Vulnerability and growth are two things we need to witness more often. Release perfection, and pursue your dreams publicly!
  3. Patience. I know, I know. But it really doesn't happen overnight. How much do you want this?
