Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ariel Blackburn, Owner of Art of Health Chiropractic, located in Johns Island, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own the Art of Health Chiropractic. Our patients range from newborns to prenatal and postnatal, blue-collar workers, and every person in between.

Tell us about yourself

I am Dr. Ariel Blackburn, and I am originally from Michigan. I moved to South Carolina in 2014 with my now husband, my Weimaraner Lyla and my dream of owning my own Chiropractic office. I had been working for someone up in Michigan but knew I wanted to branch out and spread my wings as an entrepreneur.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was almost too naïve to a fault. Knowing I was going to make this happen was something I never second-guessed. Once I was in the thick of it, with barely any money and living room furniture consisting of camping chairs and upside-down bins as end tables, I knew I couldn't give up.

It took a lot of tears and sleepless nights, but I was able to eventually secure a business loan and open a practice. I am coming up on my eight years of owning the practice, and seeing it through and watching it grow into something I am really proud of and I feel so passionate about is my biggest accomplishment as a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is I can never get too comfortable with how things are operating. I will always have to be prepared to be the CEO, the janitor, the front desk, and the Chiropractor. I can rely on my amazing staff, but ultimately everything will always fall back on my shoulders, and I need to be able to jump into whatever role I need to at the drop of a hat to make sure my business can run as smoothly as possible.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips I would give anyone looking to start, run, and grow a business is to make sure to do your research. Look at your demographics, the population, and the future growth of the area.

Figure out your "niche." It's great to want to help everyone, but at the end of the day, you have to be excited about the population you see every day. It keeps you on your toes, helps you to continue to grow in your field, and sets you apart from others.

Slow and steady is sometimes best. I didn't start off rocketing into small business success. My business grew at a pace I was able to handle. Especially those early years where I was doing it all. I believe it is what has helped me get to these year's milestones.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There will be days when owning a business is not fun. You may need to cry a little or go sit with your thoughts for a moment. The good news is you always get to start fresh the next day.
