Arch of Your Dreams - Arched

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yolanda Nguyen, Co-Owner of Arched, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

It’s kinda funny when a stranger asks, what do you do for a living? I say I do eyebrows! They always have a questionable look on their face. Although what I do is just “Eyebrows” to some, I actually have a really close relationship with all of my clients. Nurses, lawyers, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, and so much more. But behind all of what they do, sometimes they just need some time to relax or someone with an unbiased opinion to talk to about work or life.

Tell us about yourself

I got into the beauty industry when I was about 17/18. I graduated high school with my cosmetology license. I never had many eyebrows of my own; I always struggled with having to fill in my eyebrows before leaving the house. That itself made me fall in love with the art and the importance of having good eyebrows. My husband is my number one motivator; when I’m having a bad day, he knows just what to do. Sometimes I come home to clean the house, have dinner and a bath drawn with all of the laundry done. He knows that is therapy to me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After six years of doing eyebrows, my husband is now joining me in the journey to grow and expand. What started as a small thought a few years ago is now becoming our reality. About four years ago, we had a moment when we talked about how badly we’d want to work together, but how exactly would that happen. So I just yelled out, what if you do eyebrows with me? And with life running its course on us, it happened on its own two years later.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling everything, but mainly trying to please EVERYONE! I have such amazing clients that respect my time and value me as a person, but sometimes I just have a hard time finding a stopping point for myself. It doesn’t help that I’m a workaholic.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Practice your craft, be consistent, and always be genuine with your clients. I never see my clients as a business transaction.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A lot of times, I get asked how I’ve been able to build such a big clientele. To that, I always say quality over quantity. I’d rather take the fewer clients in a day to ensure only consistently high-quality results walk out of our salon.
