Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dominic Bourret, Co-Owner of Arcade MTL, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Arcade MTL is the first and only arcade bar in the city of Montreal. We have over 20 classic 80s-90s arcade cabinets and a great selection of retro console video games. We host special events and game tournaments every week. We serve themed cocktails and microbrewery beer.

Tell us about yourself

I like to party, I like to play classic video games with my friends, and I've always loved arcades, so I decided to open an arcade bar in Montreal to give the city a unique place that reflects my vision of a perfect night.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The simple fact of existing after six years in the world of bars, including two years spent in a pandemic, is an accomplishment in itself. But the biggest reward is to see the place filled every week and realize that the craze for arcades is still very much present.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

To stay relevant and continue to be creative and dynamic in order to attract people.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose partners who have complementary skills to yours. The best partners are rarely close friends.
  2. Offer something different, something that stands out. Or stand out on social media.
  3. Go for it. It is important to plan things well, but you have to take action. There would never be anything perfect at launch. You can make adjustments later.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am also the owner of Retro MTL, a specialized retro video game store in Montreal. We've been open for three years, and the business has more than tripled in size since day 1. If you are serious and a go-getter, listen to your heart, work hard and go for it! I quit my job, and I can now live from my two businesses, and I plan to open a third. Video game-related again, of course!
