Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with April King, co-founder and CEO of Better Than Provisions, located in Tucson, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Better Than Provisions is a company dedicated to creating nutrient-packed, delicious snacks that can be enjoyed guilt-free, no matter your dietary lifestyle. We make three fun flavors of a 5 Nut Grain-Free Granola that is gluten-free, low-carb, keto-friendly, vegan-friendly, and made without added sugar.

Our customers are either interested in or committed to a lifestyle of health and wellness, starting with just being a little better than they were yesterday. They also appreciate moments of indulgence and enjoy tasty snacks.

Tell us about yourself

My journey with nutrition began years ago with becoming a Holistic Nutritionist and Coach after experiencing my own issues with chronic illness and finding my way back to health with a holistic approach. I accomplished my own healing by making small changes that added up over time and eventually realized I had a passion for sharing this information with others.

Fast forward to 2016. Out of necessity, I set out to create a delicious snack that tasted great and met my dietary needs. As I worked on the recipe, I began hearing from so many friends and family that I wasn't the only one struggling to find convenient, nutrient-dense snacks that actually tasted good. As I shared our creation, others loved it, and in 2018 Better Than Provisions was born.

I am driven by helping others learn "easy to digest" health-supportive information as well as supporting those in search of delicious, better-for-you foods that fit their unique lifestyle.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been not giving up. Working for yourself isn't the easiest path, especially if you've got the limited experience to start. Building a brand and a company has carried lessons in self-confidence, perseverance, problem-solving, and faith.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I find one of the most challenging things about being a business owner is keeping a beginner's mind. It requires a commitment to being resourceful and the courage to learn things you don't already know. This is also the part I most love about being an entrepreneur. It has made me a better person, partner, and leader, and for that, I have deep gratitude.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start before you're ready. You'll learn what you need to know along the way.
  2. Be open to getting support and asking for help. You don't have to do this perfectly or all alone.
  3. Take good care of yourself, your mind, and your body. You are your #1 asset.
