Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with April Edwards, Owner of April Edwards Reiki & Tarot, located in Oldwick, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Reiki Master and Tarot reader. My clients range from college students to retirees and bankers to bartenders.

Tell us about yourself

Since I was a little girl, I’ve always been a helper. I would spend more time making sure the other kids were getting their work done than doing my own. Every report card used the word “helper” on it. I love being able to help my clients find a little peace and calmness in the midst of their stressful lives. When they get up from the table and mention how much better they feel, that's the cherry on my sundae.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting through mundane paperwork without crying. Seriously, though, it was rough and overwhelming at the start. You just need to push through. Once it’s done and done correctly, you never have to think of it again. Until tax season, that is.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing is not giving yourself time off. Because I am my business, I’m always working, even when it doesn’t look like it. My mind is always tending to lists that need to be completed or emails that need to be answered. You need to make downtime a priority as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something you wouldn’t mind doing every day, even on your worst days.
  2. Marketing is great, but word of mouth is better. One client can make all the difference.
  3. Continue to educate yourself on your industry. Changes will come, and make sure you are ready.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Small business owners are the true backbone of any community. Take care of your community, and they will take care of you
