Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chad Jens, Founder of Apps Script 101, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Apps Script 101 is an online course to teach automation of Google tools. Customers are anyone who wants to automate aspects of their work or life. The primary students we see work in an Operations, Administration, or Project Management function.

Tell us about yourself

I created this course during the extra stuck-at-home time from COVID. It's a skill set I developed and used extensively at Google, and I'm excited to be able to share that with more people. I see the main benefit of technology as helping to reduce the number of tasks and chores needing to be done by humans, allowing for more time spent on self-directed human activities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching the course and getting my first few paying customers. It's great to see the work put into a one-time effort (creating a digital resource) being used to benefit others in a scalable way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding the time to get everything done, realizing that's impossible, and becoming excellent at prioritization.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start today. It's much easier to find out if an idea has legs by jumping in and getting traction rather than planning forever and never executing.
  2. Listen to your customers. Solicit feedback, find out what is working, and find out what you could be doing better.
  3. Set reasonable goals. These can be process goals (do X every day) or outcome goals (achieve Y). Either way, be sure to give yourself enough time to see results, and don't get discouraged if it's not an immediate success.
