Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayla Hall-Johnson, Owner of Apex Dance Academy, located in Shawnee, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Apex Dance Academy is a dance studio located in Shawnee, KS. We offer professional dance classes to children and adults of all ages and levels.

Tell us about yourself

I started dancing at the age of 4, and while I participated in other sports, dance always had my heart. I danced competitively all throughout high school and then danced in college at the University of Kansas. After leaving KU, I started working in the industry as a teacher and found a true passion for teaching students, and there lies my motivation. I love teaching!! I love watching the progression of my students year over year. I enjoy the process of integrating skills in dance with everyday struggles. Watching a child master a skill they've been working on is why I do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Well, I opened during COVID, so I would say the fact that my first year was during such a trying time in the world is a huge accomplishment! But even beyond that, my expansion. I told myself within two years of being open, I wanted to expand into a bigger space, and we accomplished that goal! I couldn't be happier.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting your name out there.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create a strong identity that separates you from your competition.
  2. Delegate - if you don't feel comfortable doing the task, hire someone who can.
  3. Surround yourself with the right people.
