Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Annette O'Neill, founder of Annette O'Neill Wellness, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help people practice healthy! My customers are everyone! I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with a private practice. I am also a yoga and meditation teacher and a fitness teacher who holds regular online live classes and well as private sessions. I take a holistic approach to wellness, empowering my clients to live a healthier lifestyle covering all aspects of wellness, including nutrition, exercise, and stress management.

Tell us about yourself

I love what I do! As far back as I can remember, I was drawn to learning and practicing being healthier and sharing what I know. Early on, I made lots of mistakes, so I studied and earned degrees, certifications, and titles to become a professional. As a professional, I continue to study and learn and share! I opened my first barre exercise studio in 2002, earned my Master's in Clinical Nutrition from NYU in 2004, then proceeded to add yoga and meditation training as well. Stress management and lifestyle are equally as important as exercise and nutrition to a healthy lifestyle. Empowering people to practice healthy and discover that it is not as difficult as they always thought motivates me. I see the individual, personalize my approach, and give a positive perspective.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment will always be the many, many people I have helped. I am proud of the hard work it took to start my own business and the hard work it takes to run my own business. There is a resilience necessary to have longevity in this industry. People trusting me to help them is an accomplishment far greater than any of "my" personal accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is the test of self-confidence. There will be doubts, decisions, long hours, uncertainty, and a multitude of learning lessons (aka mistakes and critiques). The ability to learn from it all is the greatest success. That's when the work becomes a smooth flow that you develop the ability to navigate with ease.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you have a passion and can visualize making it your career, work at learning that passion and accept that it will not always be yours to enjoy but something you are giving to others.
  2. Trust yourself and the learning process, and accept the reality that it will be challenging and there will always be change.
  3. If you are able to adapt to change, you will have the ability to grow and thrive.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My business is all online. I can meet with clients globally, from anywhere, for nutrition consultations, private yoga and meditation sessions, private barre exercise sessions, or sign up from my website or from mindbodyonline for live online classes (class recordings are also available).
