Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anne-Marie Zanzal, owner of Anne-Marie Zanzal Coaching, located in Madison, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Coming Out & Beyond: LGBTQIA+ Support, and we work with people coming out later in life as well as programs and support for Queer folks that address emotional and spiritual needs. We also are now working with other Queer entrepreneurs (and allies) who want to benefit the world with the services and goods they offer.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in ministry and chaplaincy, with an emphasis on hospice, palliative care, and grief. I came out later in life, and it was the hardest and best thing I have ever done. When I came out, there was a lack of resources and underwhelming support, so I created something based on my experiences of working with people dealing with transition, loss, change, and grief. I do this because I deeply believe that when people show up as how they are created to be, the world becomes a better place.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hosting six retreats for people coming later in life, helping thousands of people with our programs, creating numerous communities for Queer folks, and hitting the six-figure mark in 2022.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Always been my business and the work I do on my mind. Practicing self-care and meditation has helped with detaching from the daily grind. Also, trusting people too much. Trust is a good thing! However, I have learned to have a professional relationship with other entrepreneurs for at least a year before proceeding with a collaboration.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Clarity, clarity, and then more clarity. Learning to have clarity about what you offer and why it serves the needs of others is vital.
  2. Assemble a good team as soon as you can. Letting control of things you don't like to do is empowering and will move you forward to create other offerings in your business.
  3. Invest in a good business coach. I am now on my second business coach, and both have helped tremendously.
