Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Claire Garber, co-founder of AnimalStone, a company that makes wildlife-inspired handmade jewelry and apparel located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family-owned and run jewelry and apparel business connecting people to wildlife through handmade jewelry and nature/wildlife-inspired apparel. We are bringing the wonder of our wildlife into your world!

Tell us about yourself

I’m energetic and driven to create beautiful things and experiences. The idea for the company started over coffee with my dad, who had the idea to create little animal figurines. We then sought out to find a designer to help bring this vision to life. I’m motivated by the infinite potential to collaborate and create with other people. The art of bringing ideas into reality brings me a lot of joy!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a loyal following of people who connect with our vision, to connect animals and people. We have always established important and enduring relationships with Wildlife organizations and contribute to conservation through donations and by sharing our partners' causes with our audiences. We're creating a family of nature lovers!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having many ideas and knowing which ones to run with and which ones to set aside. Being discerning about partners and maintaining the integrity of the brand through quality and consistency.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stick with it! If you have a passion for something, go for it.
  2. Keep your ideas and plan private while you work — everyone has an opinion, but only you can see your vision — until it becomes a reality.
  3. Persist! There will be hiccups and bumps along the road; successful people stay the course no matter how hard or discouraging life can be.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We’re always looking to connect and collaborate with like-minded brands and individuals. If you’re a creator, wildlife photographer, or you feel there is space to create something with us, connect with me!
