What's your business, and who are your customers?
Handmade 100% soy vegan and allergy-friendly candles. My customers of people like me who have sinusitis, eyes and nose sensitivities to fragrances. As I began making candles, I studied the different waxes and fragrances. I learned what type of fragrances would be best for allergy sufferers. I learned what fragrances that did not set off my six-page allergy list. I started with those.
Tell us about yourself
What began as a gift and hobby transformed into a business. Someone asked about purchasing one, then two, and before I really had the formalities worked out, I had a home-based business. My motivation is I have always desired to retire at 45 and work for myself on my terms. I am not quite ready to retire since starting the business. I can retire from my government job in less than five years. So this gives me the cushion and time to work on building my business to the next level so I can help someone else.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
When someone tells me it didn’t give them a headache to burn my candle. That’s my goal for them to enjoy a super-smelling candle with clean fragrances and pure soy wax.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, when an associate began to duplicate everything I had done after meeting with them. It was disappointing to see copycat work. But that’s business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Mindset over money, work on your personal development and inner strength.
- Make sure you are doing something you enjoy.
- As for growing - prayer, patience, social media, and marketing.
