Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andy Frye, Founder of Pronto Tax School, Inc., located in Wilmington, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Pronto Tax School, Inc. provides training, tools, and support for tax professionals. We help the people who help the people with their tax needs and problems. We specialize in online courses for tax professionals and are approved as a continuing education provider for tax preparers, Enrolled Agents, and CPAs.

Tell us about yourself

My family has been in the tax preparation business for three generations. I worked with my father to expand our business. I saw that employee training was a key differentiator for our company to provide great service for our clients while also offering great opportunities for our staff. Thus I focused a lot of effort on building out our employee training programs within our company. Seeing that other "underdog" tax businesses like ours needed training, too, my team and I began turning our internal employee training programs into online courses available to other tax professionals who have similar stories and needs to our own.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping to create fulfilling career opportunities for my teammates is my best accomplishment as a business owner. Knowing that I helped create jobs for people who then were able to buy homes and otherwise support their families and enjoy their lives makes all the hard work worth it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest thing about being a business owner is keeping a positive mindset through all the ups and downs. As an entrepreneur, there are so many times when you get excited about something, and then it doesn't work out. Accepting those "failures" as part of the process is extremely challenging, yet necessary for creating the self-discipline and grit you need to keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get and stay focused on your customers and their needs first and foremost.
  2. Get and stay serious about the finances of your business--know your numbers.
  3. Treat employees and subcontractors with respect and consideration.
