Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andrea Picket, Founder of Andrea Picket Physiotherapy, located in Perth, ON, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We offer pelvic health physiotherapy services to men, women, and children.

Common conditions treated include urinary incontinence (leakage), bladder dysfunctions (retention, frequency/ overactive, urgency),
pelvic organ prolapses, bowel dysfunction (leakage, constipation), prenatal- postnatal pain, pregnancy preparation/ education, and pelvic girdle pain (in men and women).

The clinic also offers a CORE + floor postpartum rehabilitation exercise program, yoga therapy, kinesiology, and massage therapy services.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a physio for close to 20 years. I have worked in all areas, including hospitals and private clinics. I found that both pelvic health dysfunctions were untreated, overlooked, and ignored by all health professionals- I have two children of my own, and this was the inspiration to learn more and provide this specialized service. I love educating people about themselves and empowering my clients to improve and manage their conditions.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After seven years in the same small office location, I just moved to a newly renovated office space- I wanted to create an inviting, warm and safe environment for all clients to feel comfortable visiting!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a health professional, I love my job. I would rather assess and treat my clients, so the challenge as a therapist and a business owner is setting aside the administration time to complete the day-to-day and monthly tasks that need to be done!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love what you do first- the passion for your work keeps you focused on your goal.
  2. Just do it- I started off small (1 office/ 1 day week), taking on all admin and marketing tasks.
  3. Network with a similar professional in business- ask questions, ask for tips and share ideas.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Pelvic health physiotherapy is not a well-known or understood profession. As a consequence, many people believe that urinary leakage is normal after childbirth and is just a sign of aging, and it is NOT! Medical research shows pelvic health physio is a recognized and medically recommended service as the first line of defense for both bladder and bowel dysfunction and pelvic pain. I encourage everyone to discuss any concerns with their health care professional (family doctor) and ask for help!
