Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Andrea Oliveau, Owner of Restoration Chiropractic Family Wellness, located in Woodland Hills, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a pediatric and family chiropractor, and I take care of stressed-out parents and their kids. I see children from a week or two years old up through the teenage years.
Tell us about yourself
When I was 28 years old, I was suffering from migraines. I was on countless over-the-counter and prescription drugs, but nothing helped me find lasting relief. Over the years, the drugs got stronger, and the headaches got worse, and eventually, my doctor ordered an MRI to make sure I didn't have a brain tumor. Those are scary words as a young adult! Luckily I didn't have a tumor, so then I needed to find a solution for the headaches. I was referred to a chiropractor, and my headaches finally went away a few months into care. I was a huge fan of chiropractic, and I quit my job to go back to school and become a chiropractor, so I could help others the way I had been helped.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
There's nothing like business ownership to teach perseverance. I am so proud of the countless areas of business I've learned. In chiropractic school, I learned clinical skills but no real business. With every struggle, I've learned and honed systems that have served me well over the years.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Balance. Entrepreneurs are always thinking, and turning that off is sometimes hard. One of the other things that is hard for me is recognizing there will never be an end to my to-do list.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get mentors, but be discerning about who you listen to.
- Be open-minded about how you think things should be done and what direction your business takes.
- Treat your money as if you are in a relationship with it, because you are!
