Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andrea Mayard, owner of AndreaClaireFit, located in Argyle, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am A local fitness entrepreneur. I train women and men to awaken confidence, gain strength, and become their healthiest selves again. My specialties are in weight loss, postpartum fitness, high-intensity interval training, and strength training.

Tell us about yourself

As a former College Cheerleader, I gained a healthy respect for what your mind and body can accomplish when in pristine condition. I also witnessed loved ones pass away due to previous health conditions that could have been eliminated or slowed down due to proper long-term healthy habits. Both of these acknowledgments fostered a passion for helping people live their healthiest and strongest life.

I am motivated through accountability. I set a goal and a dare with a fellow student in my last year in college to own a fitness business one day. My friend was aspiring to become a doctor, and I aspired to own a fitness business. He had a dollar on hand and said, "When you own your business, I'll send you this dollar." Years later, when sitting in my first brick-and-mortar business, I received a dollar in the mail with his letterhead as a doctor. We both accomplished our goals! This reminded me that what you put out into the world matters. People listen, people, care, and people believe in you. If we all did the same thing with one another, we would all be motivated to keep our dreams alive!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Transforming lives. I have aided one client in losing 100 pounds in one year. I have helped elderly clients go from a major fall risk to the ability to get up off the ground from any position. I have helped postpartum moms feel great again. So many accomplishments with amazing people I've been honored to work with. Teaching my two daughters that any dream is possible with hard work and dedication.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management is the most difficult thing about being a business owner for me personally. As a single mom and small business owner finding the time to do all the things can feel overwhelming. I have always said, "This isn't for the faint of heart. It's for the passionate heart."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start scared. Scared is OK. It means you care. Learn everything you can through the process and those in your industry before you. You can do it.
  2. Know your product or service so well that people are attracted to what you are selling. If you are not passionate and you don't 100% believe in what you do or sell, then your customers won't either.
  3. Don't be afraid to price your product or service right. Most new entrepreneurs slash prices to make sales. That devalues you and what you bring to the table.
